A Study of Circulating Nucleic Acid Tumor Markers Found in Different Components of Blood

About this study

The purpose of this study is to assess for the circulating nucleic acid tumor markers dispersed in the various components of blood samples from patients with proven cancer.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria

  • Case patients, in the first phase
    • Age 18 or older
    • Has either proven or suspicious for a diagnosis of an intact primary aero-digestive cancer (tracheo-bronchial or lung, esophageal, gastric, pancreatic, biliary, or colorectal)
    • Eligible cases will include any cancer stage but without prior surgery or other cancer-directed therapy 
  • Case patients, in the second phase
    • Cases with colorectal cancer will be studied using only plasma obtained from a freezer archive (IRB #622-00)
  • Control patients, in the first phase 
    • Healthy individuals
    • Age/sex-matched to case patients
    • Must have had a normal colonoscopy within the prior 5 years 
    • No past history of cancer at any site
  • Control patients, in the second phase
    • Control samples of plasma only will be obtained from a freezer archive (IRB #622-00 PI: L. Boardman or IRB #10-004833 PI: D. Ahlquist)
    • For this second phase, analysis will be done on samples from individuals that may or may not have had a colonoscopy       

Exclusion Criteria

  • Patients undergoing active radio-therapy or chemotherapy
