About this study
The primary aim of this pilot study is to determine the feasibility of delivering a music-assisted-relaxation (MAR) intervention implemented by a board-certified music therapist (MT-BC) to patients with spinal cord injury admitted to the inpatient rehabilitation unit. The secondary aim is to determine if the MAR intervention has an effect on patients anxiety and pain, as measured by pre and post-intervention surveys.
Participation eligibility
Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.
Inclusion Criteria:
- Patients admitted to the inpatient rehabilitation unit with the following diagnoses:
- Traumatic Spinal Cord injury resulting in paraplegia or quadriplegia (patients with traumatic spinal cord injury may need to have assistance from a proxy to sign consent and help with survey’s due to the result of inability to use arms.)
- Non traumatic Spinal Cord Injury (spine surgery with neurological impairment, tumor resection, and/or infection) resulting in neurologic impairment
- Patients ages 18-80
- Able to read and sign the informed consent
Exclusion Criteria:
- Diagnoses of
- bipolar disorder
- Schizophrenia
- Dementia
