Eight Brocades for Patients with Fibromyalgia

About this study

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the experiences and short term effects of the Eight Brocades (EB) for patients with fibromyalgia (FM).

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Age 18 years or older.
  • Fulfills the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) 1990 classification criteria for FM.
  • Fulfills the ACR 2010 diagnostic criteria for FM.
  • Willing to complete the 12-week, twice-a-week exercise sessions.
  • Residing within 120 mile radius from the clinic.

Exclusion Criteria: 

  • Prior experience with Eight Brocades or other similar types of Complementary and Alternative Medicine in the past 1 year such as Qi gong, Tai Chi and yoga since these share some of the principles of Eight Brocades.
  • Dementia, cancer, or other serious medical conditions limiting ability to participate in the Eight Brocades or strength training, as determined by the study physicians.
  • Any other diagnosed medical condition known to contribute to FM symptomatology that is not under adequate control for the study period such as thyroid disease, inflammatory arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, myositis, vasculitis or Sjogren's syndrome.
  • Enrollment in any other clinical trial within the last 30 days.
  • Plan to permanently relocate from the region during the trial period.
  • Positive urine pregnancy test at baseline or planning pregnancy within the study period.
  • Not English-Speaking
