A Study of Speech Changes as Predictors of Migraine Attack Onset

About this study

The purpose of this study is to predict migraine headache onset from changes in speech in people who have a history of migraines.  

 

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • 18 years of age or older
  • Migraine without aura diagnosed according to ICHD3 beta diagnostic criteria
  • 4-10 migraine attacks per month (average over the prior 3 months)
  • Fewer than 15 headache days per month (average over the prior 3 months)
  • Willing to provide speech samples 3 times per day
  • Willing to maintain a daily headache diary
  • Native English speaker

Healthy Controls:

  • 18 years of age or older
  • Willing to provide speech samples 3 times per day
  • Native English speaker

Exclusion Criteria:

  • Migraine with aura
  • Greater than 10 migraine attacks per month (average over the prior 3 months)
  • 15 or greater headache days per month (average over the prior 3 months)
  • Baseline speech/language abnormality
  • Does not speak English or is not a Native English speaker
  • More than 2 alcoholic beverages per week
  • Illicit drug use
  • Topiramate use

Healthy Controls:

  • Headaches (tension-type headache on 3 or fewer days per month allowed)
  • Speech/language abnormality
  • Does not speak English or is not a Native English speaker
  • More than 2 alcoholic beverages per week
  • Illicit drug use
  • Topiramate use
