Reliability of Measurements of Ankle Joint Dorsiflexion Using a Weight-Bearing Lunge Test Obtained in a Clinical Setting
Overview
Tab Title Description
Study type
InterventionalDescribes the nature of a clinical study. Types include:
- Observational study — observes people and measures outcomes without affecting results.
- Interventional study (clinical trial) — studies new tests, treatments, drugs, surgical procedures or devices.
- Medical records research — uses historical information collected from medical records of large groups of people to study how diseases progress and which treatments and surgeries work best.

About this study
The aim of this study will be to estimate and compare intra-rater reliability and minimal detectable change (MDC) of maximum ankle dorsiflexion (ADF) in persons with lower extremity injury using a weight-bearing lunge test (WBLT) and three clinical measurement tools: (1) standard goniometer; (2) bubble inclinometer; and (3) digital goniometer.
Participation eligibility
Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.
Inclusion Criteria:
- Participants will be recruited from the Mayo Clinic Sports Medicine Center.
- To be eligible to participate in this study a subject must have sustained an orthopedic injury to the lower extremity and assessment of ankle ADF would be an appropriate component of the patient’s routine physical therapy evaluation.
- Eligible participants will present with one or more of the following four clinical diagnoses:
- Ankle sprain
- Achilles tendinopathy
- Plantar fasciitis
- Calf strain
Exclusion Criteria:
- Persons will be denied admission to the study if weight-bearing is contraindicated.
