About this study

The aim of this study is the characterization of the vaginal and rectal microbiome in women undergoing surgical repair of rectovaginal fistula.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Females undergoing consultation for surgical repair of rectovaginal fistula by Urogynecology and/or Colon and Rectal Surgeons at Mayo Clinic

Exclusion Criteria:  

  • Current pregnancy
  • Currently taking or have taken antibiotics in the past 4 weeks
  • History of chemotherapy within 2 years of fistula surgery
  • History of pelvic or abdominal radiation therapy
  • Current and intestinal diversion
  • Current Enterovaginal Fistula
