About this study
The purpose of this study is to bring our expertise with community-engaged research to the clinical setting through the Health Equity Section (HES) in order to eliminate cancer screening health disparities among patients with limited english proficiency (LEP) in a large primary care practice.
Participation eligibility
Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.
Inclusion Criteria:
Aim 1
- Adult patients with limited english proficiency (LEP) (ages 21 and older) will be recruited from the Mayo Clinic Employee and Community Health practices, targeting 3 subgroups/strata:
- Women ages 50-64 who are eligible for all 3 recommended cancer screenings (breast, cervical, colorectal) but have completed none of them
- Men age 50-74 who have not completed colorectal cancer screening
- Adult patients with a family history of cancer documented by self-report in the electronic medical record who have not been screened as appropriate
Aim 2
- Adult healthcare providers (physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants) will be identified who have the most concentrated contact with patients with limited english proficiency (LEP)
- Medical interpreters who participate frequently in primary care visits at Mayo Clinic will be identified, stratified by language/ethnicity
- Likewise, Rochester Healthy Community Partnership (RHCP) community leaders will be identified
