About this study
The purpose of this study is to evaluate if using ultrasound to image the pupils is a feasible and accurate method compared to the standard infrared pupillary assessment.
This technique would allow patients unable to open their eyes (e.g., swollen eye) to have an adequate pupillary examination.
Participation eligibility
Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.
Inclusion Criteria:
- Patients aged older than 18 years of age, regardless of gender, ethnicity or background.
- Patients admitted to the intensive care unit at Mayo Clinic, Florida; Asociación Española Primera de Socorros Mutuos, Montevideo, Uruguay; and Hospital de Clínicas, Montevideo, Uruguay.
Exclusion Criteria:
- Patients or their medical surrogate refuse written consent or enrollment in study.
- Patients whose ultrasonographic view could not be obtained, regardless of reason, after two attempts each, by two different research staff who are experienced in UPA.
- Patients with previously diagnosed structural ophthalmologic or periorbital pathology
- Patients with facial/orbital soft tissue edema that prevents from eye opening, and therefore IPA.
