Effect of 12-Week Vegetarian Diet Intervention on Inflammatory Status and Cardio-Metabolic Parameters

About this study

The purpose of this study is to determine if providing a vegetarian diet intervention to obese individuals over a twelve-week period can reduce chronic inflammation as well as improve cardio-metabolic parameters that are precursors to the co-morbidities associated with obesity.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Adult, ages 18-65.
  • BMI of 27-40 kg/m2.
  • Participants must not currently be following a vegetarian diet, but must be willing to take up a vegetarian diet if placed in the experimental group.
  • Participants must have the capability to move easily as there are a series of tests in which they need to be able to get up and down onto an exam table.

Exclusion Criteria:

  • Adults under age 18 and over 65.
  • BMI less than or equal to 26.9 or greater than or equal to 40.1.
  • Anyone with allergies or intolerances to a certain fruits or vegetables that would inhibit them from adequately following a vegetarian diet.
  • Individuals who already follow a vegetarian diet.
  • Participants with chronic conditions such as diabetes mellitus or cancer will also be excluded.
