A Study to Evaluate Fertility, Sexual Function, and Endothelial Health in Premenopausal Women with Kidney Disease

About this study

The purpose of this study is to evaluate how advancing stages of chronic kidney disease (CKD) may impact the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis,and how alterations in sex hormones and menstrual cycles correlate with changes in endothelial health and sexual function before and after transplant.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria (Aim 1):

  • Female.
  • Ages 18 - 51 years old.
  • Current diagnosis of CKD stages 3b-5 (estimated glomerular filtration rate < 45).

Inclusion Criteria (Aim 2):

  • Female.
  • Ages 18 – 44 years old.
  • Currently being evaluated for kidney transplant (eGFR < 20ml/min).

Exclusion Criteria (Aim 1 & 2):

  • Women who are currently pregnant.
  • Prior history of hysterectomy.
  • Prior history of oophorectomy.
  • Currently using hormonal contraceptives or hormone therapy.
  • Inability to attend both study visits.
