About this study
The purpose of this study is to provide the first descriptive analysis of a long-standing HIMS program implementation.
Chemical dependency among pilots has been a long recognized issue. Since the 1970s, the Human Intervention Motivation Study (HIMS) has strived to helped pilots with alcohol and drug dependency. Using a multidisciplinary team, HIMS supports and monitors aviators during their recovery, with the goal of eventual return to flying under an FAA special issuance.
While there have been limited statistics documenting HIM successes, there is virtually no research examining the actual implementation of HIMS, patient populations, factors leading to success, or patient perception/satisfaction.
