About this study

The purpose of this study is to determine the effectiveness of an active stabilization exercise program for thumb carpometacarpal degenerative joint disease to reduce pain and improve daily function.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria 

  • 18-85 years of age
  • Diagnosis of thumb carpometacarpal degenerative joint disease through both physician exam and radiographic confirmation 
  • Will be included per principles of intention to treat

Exclusion Criteria 

  • Unable or unwilling to return for additional therapy and testing as outlined in the protocol
  • Has co-morbidities of the upper extremity including but not limited to trigger thumb, De Quervain’s tenosynovitis, or proximal cervical compression pathology
