A Study to Assess Kidney Function Markers in Transgender Individuals Receiving Gender-affirming Hormone Therapy

About this study

The purpose of this study is to determine how cystatin C, creatinine, and microalbuminuira change with gender affirming hormone therapy initiation. Blood draws and urine testing will be done at time 0, 3 months, and 6 months of hormone therapy. The results will  determine how to best interpret lab values in transgender individuals receiving gender affirming hormone therapy.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Adult transgender women and men , ≥ 18 years of age.
  • With the diagnosis of gender dysphoria according to DSM-V initiating gender affirming hormone therapy.
  • Able and willing to provide informed consent.

Exclusion Criteria: 

  • Individuals < 18 years of age.
  • Previous use of cross sex hormone therapy:
    • Estrogen;
    • Testosterone;
    • Progesterone;
    • Spironolactone;
    • 5-Alpha Reductase Inhibitor (Finasteride, Dutasteride);
    • Anti-Androgens (Leuprolide, Bicalutamide, Cyproterone Acetate).
  • Any exclusion criteria by study 20-008383 – including prior fractures, bone disorders and medications effecting bone density.
