Development of Biomarkers Differentiating Post-infectious From Neurodegenerative Smell Loss

Overview

About this study

The purpose of this study is to propose a novel approach for development of biomarkers by studying differences that may exist between patients with infectious and neurodegenerative smell loss.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Ages 18 and over of any gender or race.
  • Having unresolved smell loss (total or partial).
  • Age-matched healthy controls.

Exclusion Criteria:

  • Unable to undergo nasal endoscopy or CT scan.
  • Pregnant women.
  • Patients on chronic oral steroid therapy, oral corticosteroids in the past 4 weeks before enrollment; or intramuscular corticosteroids in the past 12 weeks before enrollment.
  • Prisoners and institutionalized patients.
  • Patients at very high risk of bleeding due to elevated bleeding profile, being on multiple blood thinners or significant thrombocytopenia.
  • Patients with neutropenia or those deemed clinically to be significantly vulnerable to post-biopsy infection.
  • Patients with history of sinonasal surgery, known diagnosis of chronic sinusitis or history consistent with chronic rhinosinusitis for the preceding 3 months which are nasal discharge, nasal obstruction/ facial congestion, facial pain-pressure-fullness, [other than a decrease in smell]).
  • No current symptoms of allergic rhinitis, hay fever, nasal allergies per patient report.
  • No prior history of smell loss exceeding that attributable to normal aging.
