A Study to Evaluate Two Dimensional vs. Three Dimensional Carotid Artery Plaque Burden with Cardiovascular Risk

About this study

The purpose of this study is to compare 2D vs 3D carotid ultrasound plaque burden against American Heart Association (AHA) calculator based clinical risk in asymptomatic adults referred for carotid ultrasound at Mayo Clinic Echo lab in Arizona.

 

 

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Patients aged 20-80 years undergoing 2D Carotid IMT/Plaque assessment for clinical indications.
  • Able to provide consent.
  • Without prior neck radiation or surgery.
  • Without history of known cardiovascular disease.

Exclusion Criteria: 

  • Technically difficult images on 2D carotid ultrasound.
  • Unable or unwilling to provide consent.
