A Feasibility Study of an Adjunct to Smoking Cessation Using Combined Respiratory Muscle Training

About this study

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the feasibility of a Combined Respiratory Muscle Training (cRMT) Program to provide an effective and sustainable solution to reduce the stress often experienced by people during an attempt to quit smoking.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria:

  1. ≥ 18 years of age
  2. Is a current cigarette smoker (past 3 months)
  3. Is enrolled in the Mayo Clinic NDC Clinical Program to try to stop smoking
  4. Motivated to stop smoking and has set a Target Quit Date
  5. Participant has access to a smart phone (android or iOS) with notifications and data plan and is willing to use it for study purposes
  6. Able to participate fully in all aspects of the study
  7. Understand and sign the study informed consent
  8. Subject is in good health as determined by the clinical investigators.

Exclusion Criteria: 

  1. Recent active (past 3 months) substance use disorder other than tobacco
  2. Any medical condition deemed by the investigator to contraindicate study participation.
