Assessment of Upper Extremity Function Using Objective Measurements

Overview

About this study

The overarching goal of this proposed research is to develop a system of objective measures that can be used to quantify activity and neuromuscular control in the patient’s upper extremity.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Patients with a brachial plexus injury (pOst-surgery) and subsequent nerve transfer surgery for elbow flexion.
  • Age range of 18 to 65 years.
  • Functional passive range of motion of the involved upper extremity.
  • Willingness to participate in the study.
  • No restriction will be placed on gender, race, or ethnicity.
  • Able to understand and follow instructions.

Exclusion Criteria:

  • Patients with a brachial plexus injury and subsequent nerve graft or free functioning muscle transfer surgery for elbow flexion.
  • Patients with substance misuse issues (e.g., smoking or other consumption of tobacco/cannabis, and alcohol dependency).
  • Closed head injury with resultant inability to follow commands.
  • Soft tissue or skeletal injuries which preclude use of an orthosis.
  • Non-functional passive range of motion.
  • Neuropathic pain which prevents use of a powered exoskeleton.
  • Amputation of the upper extremity.
  • Unwillingness or inability to comply with test procedures.

Note: Other protocol defined Inclusion/Exclusion Criteria may apply.

Eligibility last updated 10/2/23. Questions regarding updates should be directed to the study team contact.
