A Study of Meaningful Symptom Change in Advanced Cancer Using Focus Groups

About this study

The purpose of this study is to provide meaningful change thresholds at the PROMIS scale level as to when patients are able to identify meaningful differences in symptoms between vignettes.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Patients with a diagnosis of cancer, including solid tumor or hematologic malignancy, receiving treatment at Mayo Clinic, Rochester.
  • To ensure sampling patients likely to have experienced declines in fatigue and/or physical function, all patients will have had at least two in-person encounters for anti-cancer treatment within the 3 months prior to recruitment. We will exclude. those who had surgery alone. The sampling methodology developed for the CAHPS Cancer Care survey will be modified and used to identify eligible patients from Mayo Clinic’s electronic health record.
  • As the focus groups will be conducted by video conference (Zoom, Teams, or similar), access to internet is required.
  • Answered “Yes” to screening question: “In the past 3 months, have you experienced changes in your level of fatigue, physical function, or other symptoms?” Yes/No.

Exclusion Criteria

  • Unwilling to be audio recorded during the interviews.
  • Answered “No” to the screening question.
