Evaluating Cutaneous Nerve Biopsies in Refractory Gastrointestinal Motility Disorders

About this study

The purpose of this study is to evaluate cutaneous nerve biopsies from patients with refractory gastrointestinal motility disorders, and to evaluate skin biopsies for signs of small fiber neuropathy in GI dysmotility patients, which may provide a better understanding of the underlying pathology of their condition.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Individual with a gastrointestinal motility disorder that has failed both clinical and surgical options for symptomatic management.

Criteria for Healthy Volunteers

  • Adults (18 years of age or older).
  • Willingness to have a Cutaneous Biopsy.

Exclusion Criteria: 

  • Child 17 years of age or younger.
  • Individuals’incapable of informed consent.
  • Patient with diseased skin or on drugs which affect skin biology.

Criteria for Healthy Volunteers.

  • Patients with past or current medical history of gastrointestinal illnesses (Functional and motility disorders),
  • Patients with past or current medical history of peripheral neuropathy.
  • Patients with diabetes mellitus.
  • Previous gastro-esophageal surgery including vagotomy, fundoplication, gastric bypass, ulcer surgery.
  • Surgery within the past 3 months.
  • Prior GI surgery except for uncomplicated appendectomy and laparoscopic cholecystectomy.
