Hand Tremor Approach for Touch Screens

About this study

The purpose of this study is to develop an innovative smartphone interface system using a novel real-time video processing approach that allows users with hand tremor to effectively control apps and input data. The Mayo Clinic will establish the usability and acceptability of the system for persons with tremors through human subjects testing.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Participants must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Have a diagnosis of essential tremor with a moderate to severe upper extremity tremor per the Fahn-Tolosa-Marin grades of tremor (grades 2-4).
  • Be on a stable medication regimen for the previous 2 weeks.

Exclusion Criteria: 

  • Patients with a diagnosis of dementia will be excluded.
