Test Development of a Wearable Assessment of Balance Loss in Multiple Sclerosis

About this study

The purpose of this study is to develop a battery of balance tests for deployment in the clinical setting using the APDM wearable system and to establish a comparable battery for longitudinal in-home assessment using the single GENEActiv wearable device.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria:

MS patients:

  • Clinically diagnosed with MS.
  • Has clinic visit scheduled at Mayo Clinic Rochester.
  • 18+ years of age.
  • The study plans to conduct a chart review on the patients with MS to confirm their diagnosis and specifics related to their clinical course, neuro status and disease management.

Healthy controls:

  • No evidence of neurological disorder;
  • 18+ years of age.
  • This group will be asked screening questions as to whether they have neurological diseases. If they do, they will not be eligible for the study.

Exclusion Criteria: 

  • Unable to wear the devices.
  • Concerns for sinus infection or other upper respiratory problems that may impact balance at the inner ear.
  • Vertigo.
  • Inability to stand unassisted for up to one minute.
