Centered Psychotherapy for Caregivers of Patients With Advanced Cancer

About this study

The purpose of this study to determine feasibility, acceptability, and assess preliminary effects of a virtual group MCP-C on 30 of caregivers of patients with advanced cancer.  Meaning-Centered Group Psychotherapy for Cancer Caregivers MCP-C is a 8-session individual intervention that utilizes didactics, discussion, and experiential exercises that focus on themes related to meaning and caregiving. 

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria for patients:

  • Age ≥ 18 years.
  • English fluency.
  • No diagnosed severe cognitive impairment.
  • Caregiver of a patients with diagnosis of advanced, solid tumor cancer (stage III/stage IV)
  • Able to read/understand English.
  • Provide written (paper or electronic) informed consent.
  • Ability to complete questionnaire(s) by themselves or with assistance.
  • Patient baseline distress score ≥ 4/10.
  • Have ability to utilize the technology to participate in virtual groups.

Exclusion Criteria: 

  • As determined through self-report, those diagnosed with a history of a psychotic episode will be excluded.
  • Other psychological co-morbidities such as untreated schizophrenia, bipolar disease.
  • Cognitive impairment likely to interfere with participation.
