Blood Drawn at Peripheral Intravenous Line Start of Against Venipuncture for Lab Testing

About this study

The purpose of this study is to evaluate whether blood drawn at intravenous line placement is adequate for laboratory testing, with acceptably low rates of sample rejection.  

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • 18 years of age and older in either ED or PPPU requiring an IV start and one or more of the following lab tests/tubes:
    • chemistry (gold top serum separator [SST] or orange top rapid serum [RST] tubes);
    • hematology (purple top EDTA whole blood tubes);
    • coagulation (light blue top citrate plasma tubes); or
    • troponin (light green top plasma separator tubes [PST].

Exclusion Criteria:

 

  • Patients under the age of 18 years who present in either ED or PPPU and patients who do not require laboratory testing or IV placement. 
  • Patients who either have or will have central intravenous line placement in ED or PPPU, who are critically ill (ESI score 1 or acuity level 1 Resuscitation).
  • Confirmed or suspected to be pregnant.
