Epilepsy Smartphone Study

Overview

About this study

This is a multi-center study with an overall aim of evaluating the accuracy to which neurologists can discriminate seizures from other epileptic, nonepileptic or physiologic seizures by home video recordings, with the overall goal of determining whether this is a feasible diagnostic method in settings where video electroencephalogram monitoring  (VEM) may be limited.

This will be achieved by obtaining smartphone video recordings from consecutive adult patients with the intent of admission to the epilepsy monitoring unit to capture the seizure. Adults included will have a confirmed electroclinical diagnosis by video-EEG monitoring of the event of concern, classified as either epileptic or non- epileptic seizure, or physiologic event.  The videos will be reviewed, and qualitative analysis determined as definite seizure, probable or unable to indeterminate epileptic, non epileptic or physiologic seizure. The answer will also include a quantitative scale rating the certainty of diagnosis. Classifications will be compared to electroclinical diagnosis for assessment of accuracy.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Adults seen in the outpatient neurology clinic and suspect to have epilepsy
  • Have a diagnostic VEM capturing the type of seizure identified in the smartphone video

Exclusion Criteria:

  • Children and adolescents < 18 years of age
  • Pregnant women
  • Patient with seizures without a diagnostic EMU
  • Patients without a home video recording
  • The habitual most disabling event (prevalent and relevant) is not captured by smartphone video and/or VEM
  • Patient unable, unwilling or failing to sign an informed consent form
  • Patients not evaluated by an expert for formal diagnosis and treatment recommendations

Note: Other protocol defined Inclusion/Exclusion Criteria may apply.
