Preoperative Prayer Into Ambulatory Surgical Patients’ Experience and Its Impact on Patient Anxiety and Satisfaction

About this study

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the incidence of surgical outpatients that accept the invitation to pray before surgery. To evaluate the effect of prayer on surgical outpatients' change in anxiety in preoperative phase of surgical experience using the Rapid Anxiety Assessment Tool (RAAT) pre- and post-prayer intervention. To evaluate surgical outpatients' satisfaction with the preoperative prayer intervention using the "Was it Worth It" questionnaire & supplemental questions prior to patient discharge from Gonda 7. To assess the feasibility and staff satisfaction of incorporating preoperative prayer into a busy surgical practice.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria: 

  • Surgical outpatients > or equal to 18 years of age.
  • Able to read and speak English OR able to communicate using interpreter.
  • Able to give oral consent.

Exclusion Criteria: 

  • Surgical outpatients < 18 years of age.
  • Unable to read and speak English OR unable to communicate using interpreter..
  • Unable to give oral consent.
