Does Surgical Approach Affect Patient Satisfaction and Joint Awareness Following Total Hip Arthroplasty?

About this study

The purpose of this study is to:

  • Determine patient reported outcomes following total hip arthroplasty based on surgical approach.
  • Determine if the Forgotten Joint Score (FJS)-12 has superior capability to discriminate outcomes in patients with THA compared to the modified Harris Hip Score (mHHS).

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Primary THA performed at Mayo Clinic Rochester with either the PL, AL, or DA approach
  • Patients presenting at the 2 year postoperative visit ±3 months

Exclusion Criteria: 

  • Previous surgery about the hip
  • BMI >35
  • Postoperative complications including infection, dislocation, or any reoperation
  • Intraoperative fracture
