Understanding Return to Play for Athletes with Cardiovascular Disease

About this study

The purpose of this study is to understand the logistical aspects and the barriers that athletes with cardiovascular disease have faced in the process of returning to play, to understand the decision-making process that occurs among athletes, their families, medical professionals, and the school/club administration in choosing to return to the field, and to understand the contingency/emergency plans in the athletes who returned to play.

 

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Athletes who participated previously or currently at the high school or college level with cardiac disease selected by Dr. Ackerman in the Mayo Clinic Inherited Disease Clinic/Genetic Heart Rhythm Clinic.
  • Age at least 18 years old.
  • Patients with cardiac disease who have been involved in organized sports prior to diagnosis.

Exclusion Criteria: 

  • Inability to participate in or conduct interviews in English.
  • Those who may lack the cognitive ability to participate in interviews.
