A Study to Assess Palliative Care Impact on Patients with End-stage Renal Disease

About this study

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the impact of palliative care consultations on quality of life and advance care planning in end-stage renal disease patients on hemodialysis, evaluate hemodialysis patients’ and caregivers’ satisfaction with palliative care consultations, and to compare quality of life and advance directive completion in dialysis patients who have and have not received palliative care consultations.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Patients ages 18 and above with end-stage renal disease on outpatient hemodialysis at Mayo Clinic FL between July 1, 2018 and July 1, 2019 and their primary caregiver.
  • English speaking.

Exclusion Criteria: 

  • Diagnosis of dementia.
  • Patients who are deceased and who did not have a palliative care intervention from July 1, 2018 to July 1, 2019.
