Master Athletes Development of Coronary Artery Disease and Hypertension

About this study

The purpose of this study is to determine association of exercised-induced systolic blood pressure and development of coronary artery disease in master athletes.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria:

Eligible participants must include all of the following:

  • Be a Master Athlete:
    • Is ≥ 35 years old;
    • Currently (or who has previously) systematically training for competitive and/or mass participation sporting events;
    • Recent history of participation in competitive and/or mass participation event (e.g., 1 or 2 per year for past 5 years); AND
    • Current training includes ≥ 4 exercise sessions per week for a total duration of ≥ 150 minutes per week;
    • Has evidence of trivial, mild, or moderate (< 70%) coronary stenosis on cardiac CT scan within 12 months prior to enrollment;
    • Actively participates in moderate to high intensity athletics for at least 100 minutes per week.

Exclusion Criteria:

Exclusion criteria include the following:

  • Greater than 50% left main coronary artery disease on cardiac CT scan.
  • Inability to exercise and/or perform resistance exercise.
  • Currently on antihypertensive therapy.
  • Family or Personal History of Sudden Cardiac Death.
  • Has clinical angina or heart failure.
  • Positive for pregnancy.
