Erectile Dysfunction
Researchers in the Department of Urology conduct ongoing research to find causes and solutions for erectile dysfunction (ED). Research indicates that most cases of erectile dysfunction result from medical problems, usually related to problems in the vascular system in the penis linked to high cholesterol, diabetes, smoking, surgery or medication.
Areas of research in erectile dysfunction include:
- Physiological mechanisms and chemical processes in smooth muscle relaxation
- The association between smoking and erectile dysfunction
- The risks of sexual activity for patients with cardiovascular disease, specifically, the relationship between erectile dysfunction and the presence of cardiovascular disease, and the prevalence of pathophysiological factors of ED and cardiovascular disease
- The relationship between lower urinary tract symptoms and sexual dysfunction
- The effect of sildenafil citrate (Viagra) on the relationship between changes in systemic blood pressure and coronary blood flow
- Causes of Peyronie's disease, including possible genetic associations
