The Musculoskeletal Research Training Program at Mayo Clinic provides opportunities for postdoctoral fellows, predoctoral Ph.D. students and medical students in basic and clinical musculoskeletal research projects. The scope of research projects spans areas including:
- Biochemistry
- Biomechanics
- Biomedical engineering
- Endocrinology
- Epidemiology
- Genetics
- Machine learning and artificial intelligence
- Molecular and cellular biology
- Orthopedic research
All trainees are expected to make significant contributions to the biomedical literature and to participate in musculoskeletal research workshops and journal clubs. Each postdoctoral fellow is also expected to submit a grant application for independent research activities by the end of the training period.
Stipend support is offered with all appointments.
Position availability
There are five postdoctoral positions, two predoctoral positions and two short-term predoctoral positions awarded to the Musculoskeletal Research Training Program a year. The number of open positions varies.
Eligibility
Postdoctoral positions
To be eligible for postdoctoral fellowship positions, applicants must:
- Be performing clinical or basic research in a musculoskeletal area
- Have a graduate degree, such as a Ph.D., M.D., M.D.-Ph.D. or D.V.M.
- Have no more than one year of postdoctoral support on another National Institutes of Health (NIH) institutional training grant
- Be citizens or noncitizen nationals of the United States at the time of appointment or have been legally admitted as permanent residents
Predoctoral positions
To be eligible for predoctoral training positions, applicants must:
- Be a Ph.D. student enrolled in the Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences Ph.D. Program or an M.D.-Ph.D. student at Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine who is performing clinical or basic research in a musculoskeletal area
- Ideally have passed the written and oral qualifying exams in Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and be engaged in predoctoral research in the laboratory of a faculty member who is a mentor in the Musculoskeletal Research Training Program
- Have had no more than one year of predoctoral support on another NIH institutional training grant or NIH individual fellowship award
- Be citizens or noncitizen nationals of the United States at the time of appointment or have been legally admitted as permanent residents
Short-term predoctoral positions
To be eligible for short-term predoctoral training positions, applicants must:
- Be medical students, dental students, students in other allied health professional programs or students in physical and quantitative science graduate programs who are in good academic standing
- Ideally have an interest in musculoskeletal, orthopedic or basic research careers and have identified a mentor from faculty of the Musculoskeletal Research Training Program
- Complete a project proposal by the end of their first week in the laboratory
- Be citizens or noncitizen nationals of the United States at the time of appointment or have been legally admitted as permanent residents
Appointees must have received an M.D. or comparable doctoral degree by the beginning date of the training grant appointment.
