Overview

The Mayo Clinic Department of Otolaryngology — Head and Neck Surgery at Mayo Clinic's campus in Jacksonville, Florida, offers a clinical research fellowship that provides an opportunity for fellows to work within our research program to advance patient care. The James Russell Crawford and Martha Crawford Endowed Clinical Research Fellowship in Otolaryngology advances clinical care and contributes to the larger body of scientific knowledge in the field of otolaryngology.

The Crawford Fellowship is made possible by a generous gift from James and Martha Crawford. It is specifically geared toward U.S. medical school graduates who are interested in otolaryngology and early-career otolaryngologists trained outside the United States who are seeking an opportunity to:

  • Design study protocols.
  • Participate in current clinical studies.
  • Perform data analysis.
  • Produce original manuscripts for presentation at national and regional meetings and for publication.

Mayo Clinic's Department of Otolaryngology — Head and Neck Surgery in Florida has a busy tertiary care surgical practice with an abundance of untapped clinical experience and data awaiting assimilation, presentation and publishing. Our medical and surgical records are completely electronic with search engines to facilitate data mining.

As a research fellow, you will be given an opportunity to immerse yourself in the research side of clinical practice and gain invaluable experience and training for your future career. In the program, you'll assist with ongoing projects, database management and data acquisition. You'll also have the opportunity to develop a research idea, work with biostatisticians to create a statistical plan and attend faculty research meetings.

The scope of the fellowship includes all disciplines of otolaryngology. Our surgeons subspecialize in head and neck oncological surgery, advanced endoscopic sinus surgery and otology-neurotology. Please note that this fellowship is for clinical research only and therefore there is no direct responsibility for, or participation in, either surgical or outpatient clinical patient care. However, you would have opportunities to observe these practices.

This opportunity leads to original manuscripts for presentation at meetings and for publication. The number of publications and projects each fellow can participate in is directly related to the individual's motivation and efficiency. The department encourages fellows to take leadership roles and earn first authorship in their primary projects.
