A Study Comparing Changes in Lung Diffusing Capacity, Cardiac Output, and Pulmonary Vascular Pressures During Exercise in Younger versus Older Individuals

About this study

The purpose of this study is to determine and compare changes in lung diffusing capacity, cardiac output, and pulmonary vascular pressures during exercise for younger versus older individuals. It is possible that the blood vessels of the lungs play a greater role in unexplained exercise intolerance and shortnesss of breath in older individuals than previously thought.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria

  • Non-smoker
  • BMI ≤ 35
  • Normal pulmonary function (FVC, FEV1)
  • No history of cardiovascular, cardiorespiratory, or metabolic disease

Exclusion Criteria

  • Women who are pregnant
  • History of smoking (> 5 pack years)
  • BMI > 35
  • Lower than normal pulmonary function
    • < 80% pred FVC
    • < 80% pred FEV1
  • History of cardiovascular, cardiorespiratory, or metabolic disease
  • Unable to exercise normally due to orthopedic or other reasons
