Patients’ Perception of Surgical Incisions Following Two Approaches for Total Hip Arthroplasty

About this study

Patients undergoing a total hip arthroplasty (THA) using either a direct anterior or posterolateral approach will be asked to return to clinic 2 years following THA to evaluate their scars from the incisions. Both the Patient Observer Scar Assessment Scale (POSAS) and the Stony Brook Scar Evaluation Scale (SBSES) will be used to assess patients’ scars. The results of these evaluation scales will then be compared between the anterior and posterolateral approach cohorts.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion criteria:

Patients undergoing a total hip arthroplasty (THA) using either a direct anterior or posterolateral approach
19 years of age or older
English-speaking, and ability to fill out a patient-reported outcome questionnaire

Exclusion criteria:

Any prior hip surgery
Simultaneous bilateral THA
Cemented THA
Bikini-incision direct anterior approaches
Any surgical treatment for scarring (i.e. scar revision surgery)
Previous superficial wound infection
Any hip revision surgery prior to the scar assessment date
