A Study of Outcomes from the Use of Tranexamic Acid in Revision Total Joint Arthroplasty

About this study

The purpose of this study is to determine the best dosing plan and route of administration of tranexamic acid to minimize post-operative blood loss and transfusion requirements after a redo of a total knee replacement surgery.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria

  • Scheduled for revision THA or TKA defined as
    • Femoral component exchange
    • Acetabulum/tibial component exchange
    • Both component exchange
    • Explant of both components and placement of antibiotic cement spacer
    • A second stage re-implantation procedure

Exclusion Criteria

  • Scheduled for a head and liner/poly exchange
  • Known allergy to TXA
  • Acquired disturbances of color vision
  • Refusal of blood products
  • Pre-operative use of anticoagulant therapy within five days before surgery
  • A history of arterial or venous thrombotic disease including
    • Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
    • Pulmonary Embolism (PE)
    • Cerebrovascular Accident (CVA)
    • Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA)
  • Pregnancy
  • Breastfeeding
  • Major co-morbidities
    • Myocardial infarction or stent placement within one year
    • Severe pulmonary disease
    • Renal impairment
    • Hepatic failure
