A Study of Using Ultrasound Shear Wave Elastography to Evaluate Eosinophilic Esophagitis

About this study

The purpose of this study is to investigate the use of noninvasive ultrasound shear wave elastography and ultrasound blood vessel imaging to evaluate eosinophilic esophagitis.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Controls
    • Not on inhaled or systemic steroids, proton pump inhibitors, H2 blockers or Leukotriene inhibitors
    • Adults and children without known history of gastrointestinal or atopic disease and have none of the following symptoms
      • Abdominal pain
      • Vomiting
      • Dysphagia
      • Failure to thrive
      • Food impaction
      • Heart burn
      • Acid regurgitation
      • Cough
      • Asthma
      • Food allergy
      • Environmental allergy
  • Subjects
    • Known EoE
      • Found to have endoscopic and pathologic findings suggestive of EoE
      • Have 15 or greater eosinophils/ hpf on upper endoscopy biopsies (must have been on a PPI for 8 weeks prior to procedure)
    • Known or suspected EoE
      • Underwent upper endoscopy to evaluate
        • Vomiting
        • Abdominal pain
        • Dyspepsia
        • Heart burn
        • Dysphagia  

Exclusion Criteria:

  • Previous esophageal surgery
  • Known congenital abnormality of the esophagus such as
    • TEF
    • Esophageal web
    • Bronchial remnants
    • Esophageal cleft
  • Known celiac disease
  • Known inflammatory bowel disease or other GI inflammatory inflammatory disease
  • Body mass index (BMI) > 35
  • Unreliable ultrasound images
  • Adults lacking capacity to consent
  • Prisoners
