Prophylactic Benzodiazepine versus Reinstitution of Maintenance Antiseizure Drugs following Ictal SPECT

About this study

The primary aim of this study is to compare the pre- and post-single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) seizure frequency following an IV benzodiazepine protocol versus reinstitution of maintenance antiseizure drugs (ASDS).

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. Inclusion Criteria:

Age >18
Admitted to Mayo Clinic Florida EMU
Patients with medically refractory focal epilepsy

Exclusion Criteria:

Patients with generalized epilepsy
Patients with epileptic seizures coexisting with psychogenic non-epileptic seizures
Patients with previous history of SISCOM related complication
Patients who are allergic to the radioisotope (Technetium Tc99m Exametazime)
Pregnant women
Patients who refuse to participate in the study
