A Study to Evaluate the Mechanical Properties of the Most Common Muscle Involved in Rotator Cuff Tears using Shear Wave Elastography (SWE)

Overview

About this study

Our goal is to determine if the stiffness of supraspinatus muscle can be measured non-invasively before surgery, using ultrasound B-mode together with a new ultrasound technique called Shear Wave Elastography (SWE). The hope is that this assessment of muscle stiffness before surgery will help the doctors to plan the best surgical approach.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Male or female

  • Normal subjects and patients with known rotator cuff pathology (Tear size is over than 3 cm) who have operative indications and desire surgical treatment for rotator cuff tear.

Exclusion Criteria:

  • History of shoulder surgery
  • History of multiple sclerosis, primary muscle disease or myopathy
  • History of direct blunt or sharp trauma to the supraspinatus muscle
