Virtual World-based Cardiac Rehabilitation Program to Encourage Healthy Lifestyle Choices Among Cardiac Patients

About this study

The aim of this project is to assess the feasibility and utility of a virtual world-based cardiac rehabilitation (CR) program as an extension of a face-to-face conventional CR program (Destination Rehab).

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Recently hospitalized for one of the following:
    • An acute coronary syndrome (ACS) (unstable angina, ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction, non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction)
    • Heart valve replacement
    • Heart transplant
    • Heart assistive device placement
    • Heart failure
    • Elective percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI)
    • Stable angina
  • At least one modifiable, lifestyle risk factor target:
    • Sedentary lifestyle (< 3 hours of physical activity per week)
    • Unhealthy diet (consumption of < 5 servings of fruits and vegetables daily)
    • Current smoking (>one year).

Exclusion Criteria: 

  • <18 years of age, non-fluent in English
  • Lack of home high-speed Internet access
  • Lack of VW compatible computer (including desktop or laptop)
