A Study to Design an Algorithm to Estimate Critical Power (CP) from a Single Exercise Session, Requiring A Single Visit to the Laboratory

About this study

The purpose of this study is to develop a novel algorithm that will estimate critical power (CP) from a modified incremental exercise protocol that does not require highly supramaximal cycling efforts. This exercise protocol will be compared to the CP determined by the “gold-standard” traditional testing method described below.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Participants will be within the age range of 18 and 45 years, and will be non-smokers with no current or past history of cardiovascular, pulmonary or neuromuscular disease.  As per the American College of Sports Medicine’s (ACSM) Guidelines for Exercise Testing and Prescription, we will consider patient as “low risk” for participating in exercise, if they have:
  • No family history cardiovascular disease
  • Have a BMI <30kg∙m-2
  • Participate in at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise a minimum of 3 times a week
  • No diagnoses of hypertension
  • No diagnosis of dyslipidemia
  • No diagnosis of prediabetes.
