Identifying and Analyzing Psychosocial Symptoms in Young Adults after Acute Ischemic Stroke

Overview

About this study

The purpose of this pilot study is to examine the feasibility of methods to assess and describe the presence of symptoms and their characteristics in young adult stroke survivors.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion criteria

  • Patients admitted to either Mayo Clinic Hospital-St Marys Campus or Mayo Clinic Hospital-Methodist Campus for primary ischemic stroke who are between 18 and 65 years of age.
  • Patients admitted with primary diagnosis of acute ischemic stroke will be identified from administrative databases and screened for eligibility.
  • Prior to discharge, patients will be invited to participate in the study and if they consent, baseline data will be collected prior to hospital discharge.
  • Follow-up data will be collected via phone or in person at 6 months post-stroke, depending on patient preference.

Exclusion criteria

  • Patients with stroke that is not ischemic (e.g. subarachnoid hemorrhage; intracerebral hemorrhagic stroke) and stroke that is not the primary reason for admission will be excluded.
  • Patients unable to provide consent and those with past history of cognitive impairment will be excluded as proxy completion of symptom intensity and burden is not appropriate.
  • Patients who discharge to skilled nursing facility will be excluded as their follow up needs and support systems are likely different than those who return to community living.
  • Patients who discharge to hospice care will be excluded.
  • Patients unable to understand or speak English will be excluded.
