A Study to Adapt and Validate a Patient Triage Questionnaire for Emergency Department Use

About this study

The purpose of this study is to adapt, adjust, and test the usability of a self-administered patient triage questionnaire in the Mayo Clinic Emergency Department.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Stage I – The following are the inclusion criteria for the first stage of the study:
    • Patients who had presented to the ED at Mayo Clinic Rochester, Saint Marys Campus;
    • Patient consented to Minnesota Research Authorization;
    • Adult patients ages ≥18 years of age at index date.
  • Stage II – The following are the inclusion criteria for the second stage of the study:
    • Patients presenting to the ED at Mayo Clinic Rochester, Saint Marys Campus;
    • Adult patients ages ≥18 years of age at index date.

Exclusion Criteria:

  • The following subjects or situations are excluded in the study for stage I:
    • Patients who have declined Minnesota Research Authorization.
  • The following subjects or situations are excluded in the study for stage II:
    • Patient arriving to the ED by the EMS system (by ambulance);
    • Patients who are in police custody, intoxicated, cognitively impaired, or otherwise;
    • unable to fully consent based on provider assessment;
    • Patients who are non-English speaking / reading.
