About this study

FIT is grounded in social cognitive, self-determination, and family systems theories and, as such, aims to promote healthy eating and movement habits by facilitating the development of parent-adolescent communication and problem-solving skills to support the adolescents’ and family’s pursuit of health behavior change goals.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Adolescents ages 11-17 years, in school and living with their parents/guardians.
  • BMI is at or above the 95th percentile for age and gender.
  • Adolescent has seen a Mayo Clinic physician or advanced practice nurse practitioner (AAP) who determined that lifestyle modification for weight management is clinically indicated and exercise is safe for the adolescent.
  • Is willing and able to participate in the intervention sessions.
  • At least 1 of the adolescent’s parents/guardians is willing and able to participate in all study sessions.
  • The intervention is not appropriate for patients who have had active suicidal ideation, psychiatric hospitalization, residential treatment, active eating disorder or substance use disorder in the last 6 months. When patients present with any of these conditions, they will be referred to appropriate care to address these more immediate needs.
  • Participants must be able to speak and read English.

Exclusion Criteria:

  • Individuals under age of 11 and over age of 17.
