Pain From Non-obstructing Stones

About this study

A prospective study to determine if the removal of non-obstructing renal calculi can reduce or eliminate participant's pain and/or improve their quality of life.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Patients with Renal colic and nonobstructing renal calculi.  No stone greater than 10 mm in longest diameter.
  • All other causes the pain to be eliminated (by clinical judgment; and because the pain is in doubt assessment by family doctor medical specialist will be obtained).
  • Patient is older than 18 years old.
  • Moderate to severe pain (more than 5 on pain scale; pain is worse in the last 24 hours).

Exclusion Criteria:

  • Patients with anatomic abnormalities (i.e., calyceal diveritculum).
  • Ureteral calculi.
  • Nephrocalcinosis.
  • Renal tubular acidosis, medullary sponge kidney, sarcoidosis.
  • Hydronephrosis or hydrocalicosis. 
  • Minimal pain (< 5 on pain scale).
