Mayo Clinic Superspecialty Telemedicine Consultation Pilot Study

About this study

The overall objective of this project is to determine the feasibility of implementing a superspecialist consult model between Mayo Clinic and UMMC in the field of OB nephrology in 20 participants who are ≥ 18 years of age. 

 

 

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Patients will be recruited at the UMMC site.
  • Pregnant women, 18 years or older, with high risk pregnancy as determined by their attending University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) Physician who fall into one of the followoing catagories:
    • Pre-existing glomerulonephritis in the setting of pregnancy, in particular with the following high-risk:
      • On immunosuppression;
      • Proteinuria greater than 1 g daily;
      • eGFR < 45 ml/min/BSA.
  • Pre-existing resistant hypertension in the setting of pregnancy.
  • End-stage kidney disease patients, including women on dialysis or with kidney transplants.
  • Acute kidney injury in pregnancy or in post-partum period.
  • Pre-conception counseling for any high-risk patients with kidney disease and/or hypertension.

Exclusion Criteria:

  • Patients younger than age 18.
  • Patients that do not wish to engage in telemedicine consult services (in which case the possibility of asynchronous consultation will remain).
  • No exclusion based on diagnoses, insurance or citizenship.
  • As long as an interpreter is present, there will be no limitations on language.
