Detergents in the Pathogenesis of Eosinophilic Esophagitis

About this study

The purpose of this study is to test the hypothesis that detergents induce mucosal barrier impairment and initiate allergic inflammation in the esophagus. Healthy subjects will be recruited to undergo esophageal string tests and high-resolution esophageal manometry with impedance testing before and after brushing their teeth with a toothpaste that contains the detergent sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS). Detergent concentrations in saliva and epithelial markers of inflammation from mucosal secretions collected by the string test and mucosal impedance measurements will be collected and readouts will be compared at baseline and after brushing teeth with a toothpaste containing SLS.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Remuneration is offered for participation in this study.

Inclusion Criteria:

Normal, healthy volunteers.
Age: ≥ 18 years old.
Able to swallow pills.

Exclusion Criteria:

Individuals < 18 years old.
Personal history of esophageal disease including but not limited to eosinophilic esophagitis, esophageal dysmotility, or GERD/reflux.
History of dysphagia (i.e., difficulty swallowing), chronic vomiting, chronic abdominal pain, unintentional weight loss.
Celiac disease, inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome, esophageal varices, chronic aspiration, connective tissue disorder, or known parasitic infection.
Gelatin allergy.
Use of a toothpaste containing SLS within 2 weeks of the study.
Pregnancy.
