Effect of Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing on Airway Collapse

About this study

The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of continuous positive airway pressure on cardiopulmonary and symptomatic responses to cardiopulmonary exercise testing in patients with Expiratory Central Airway Collapse.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Patients with pulmonary function test, 6-minute walk test and dynamic bronchoscopy or computed tomography evidence of airway collapse of at least 70% in main airways documented in Mayo Clinic electronic medical records.
  • Patients willing and able to provide written consent.
  • Patients who are able to perform a physical exercise testing, including walking, jogging or cycling.

Exclusion Criteria:

  • Patients with musculoskeletal disorders or other conditions that limit exercise performance.
  • Pregnancy. A urine pregnancy test will be required for all patients of childbearing condition.
  • Patients unable or unwilling to provide written informed consent.
  • Patients with contraindications to anesthetics, including allergies or sensitivities.
  • Patients with known history of esophageal varices or nasal deformities, and on current use of anticoagulants.
