A Mixed Method Study of Life After Pediatric Intensive Care

About this study

The purpose of this study is to utilize qualitative methods, including one on one interviews and focus groups, to discover themes describing the experience of children and their families after being discharged home from PICU and their potential interests in outpatient follow-up care and interventions.  Also, to conduct a survey with 30 parents or guardians and ask about their opinions regarding the themes discovered in aim 1 and test the feasibility of questionnaires to screen for problems after PICU.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Parents or guardians of children who were between 4 and 10 years old at the time of PICU admission at Mayo Rochester in 2022 and discharged home afterwards.

Exclusion Criteria:

  • Parents or guardians who do not speak English. This is recognized as a limitation and the need to study non-English-speaking population in the future.
