Characteristics of Unhurried Conversations and Shared Decision Making in Clinical Encounters

About this study

The purpose of this study is to observe the occurrence of shared decision making (SDM) and identify characteristics of unhurried conversations in clinical encounters of clinicians and patients. The findings from these observations will contribute to the development of measures to evaluate shared decision making (SDM) and unhurried conversations.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria - Patients:

  • Adults ≥ 18 years.
  • Have an appointment scheduled in primary care.

Inclusion Criteria - Clinicians:

  • Clinicians who meet with patients in primary care.

 Exclusion Criteria:

  • Major barriers to providing informed consent (i.e., dementia, severe hearing or visual impairment).
