Effect of Fluctuations in Pressure on Human Performance

Overview

About this study

The purpose of this study is to investigate the potential contribution of rapid cabin pressure fluctuations to reported physiologic episodes (PEs). A new hypobaric chamber will be utilized to study the effects of the magnitude, frequency, and duration of pressure fluctuations on pilot physiology and cognitive performance. Multiple indicators of lung function, physiology, and cognition will be assessed. This work will help better define the conditions in which pressure fluctuations may lead to PEs and define criteria to evaluate environmental control systems and better protect pilots in tactical aircraft.
